During the month of September, they reviewed 72 of these announcements, including the launch of the drone pilot on the road carried out by Telefónica together with the DGT and Seat and in collaboration with Ficosa and Aeorum. Ovum wanted to recognise our commitment to road safety by granting us this recognition.

In Telefónica we opt for IoT solutions to improve road safety

This IoT solution has several components that provide the driver with a sixth sense, which warns him in case there is an obstacle or a cyclist ahead on the road to avoid a possible accident. The IoT system has different elements: a device, in this case a drone with a camera, which captures images of what is happening on the road; connectivity: as it sends it in real time via Telefónica's mobile network to a server. And data processing as this image is processed and detects if there is a bicycle or a vehicle stopped on the road, so it sends an alarm to the connected car. This IoT solution allows drivers to be aware of risks that may occur further down the road.

According to Ovum, "this project is particularly innovative due to the alliance between partners and the way it brings together the different existing technologies and capabilities to develop a ready-to-launch service that will successfully reduce the number of traffic accidents in Spain.

Drones in Telefónica IoT innovation projects

This is not the first time we used drones in Telefónica for our innovation pilots. Previously, a firefighting drone pilot has been launched where, thanks to new technologies and IoT, they can detect the origin of a fire and send an emergency signal with its location to the emergency services.

Telefónica is very happy to have received this recognition for contributing to the reduction of road accidents and improving road safety.
