Madrid, 12 January 2017. - Telefónica has announced today the creation of a new ETSI Industry Specification Group on Context Information Management (ISG CIM) for smart applications. Telefónica has co-founded this new group together with NEC, Easy Global Market, Orange and iMec.
Context comprises all the data that can be used to characterize the situation of an entity (a person, a place, a vehicle, a thing, etc.) relevant to an application. For instance, in smart cities the context is comprised by all the real time data that describes what is happening in the city. This can include multiple aspects such as air quality, parking status, traffic flows, weather conditions, public transport, etc. Context data is, on one hand, provided by IoT devices or by information systems, and on the other hand, consumed by applications and services that exhibit a smart, context-aware behavior, improving efficiency and sustainability.
The ISG CIM will focus on developing specifications for a common context information management API and harmonized data models. The final aim is to foster the openness and interoperability of smart cities, avoiding vendor-locking, and enabling a stronger ecosystem, benefitting operators, entrepreneurs, IoT providers, municipalities and citizens. This new group will coordinate with other related industry initiatives and standards bodies including ETSI SmartM2M, oneM2M and W3C. Telefónica plans to make outstanding technical contributions, coming from the FIWARE initiative and the Thinking City Platform.
Participation in the cross-sector Context Information Management Industry Specification Group is open to all ETSI members as well as organizations who are not members, subject to signing ISG Agreements. For information on how to participate please contact ISGsupport@etsi.org. The current list of members and participants in ISG CIM is available at:
